Managing Large Mature Trees in a Residential Garden

Large trees can be a fantastic feature in a garden, but their size and position sometimes mean that careful management becomes necessary.

At this Northampton property, the impressive mature cedar had developed a broad canopy with long lateral branches. Alongside it stood tall poplar trees that had grown considerably higher than the surrounding buildings.

Rather than removing the trees, the customer opted for targeted tree reductions, allowing their overall size and spread to be better managed while retaining their presence within the garden.

Cedar Tree Side Reduction

The cedar required a side reduction, concentrating on reducing the lateral extent of selected parts of its canopy.

Working at height, our tree surgeon carefully reduced the relevant branches rather than carrying out an unnecessarily heavy overall reduction. This targeted approach allowed us to address the tree’s spread while maintaining the cedar’s characteristic form.

With a tree of this size, selecting appropriate pruning points is particularly important. The aim is to achieve the required clearance and reduction without leaving an excessively harsh or unbalanced appearance.

Poplar Tree Height Reduction

The neighbouring poplar trees presented a different challenge. Their tall, upright growth meant that the work was primarily focused on reducing their overall height.

Our climber accessed the upper canopy using professional climbing and rope systems before progressively reducing the tallest stems.

The images from the project give a particularly good perspective on the height involved. From the upper canopy, the climber was working well above the surrounding properties, making controlled cutting and secure positioning essential throughout the job.

Reducing the trees in sections allowed the work to be completed methodically while maintaining control over the cut material within the residential setting.

Specialist Tree Climbing and Rigging

Access is a major consideration when working on large trees in established gardens. Properties, fences, neighbouring gardens and other trees can all restrict where branches can safely be allowed to fall.

Professional climbing and rigging equipment enabled our arborists to access the required sections of the trees and manage the work from within the canopy.

The project demonstrates why large tree reductions are specialist arboricultural work. It is not simply a case of cutting the tops or sides from a tree; consideration needs to be given to its structure, the position of suitable pruning points and the surrounding environment.

A More Manageable Canopy

Following the work, the poplars had a noticeably lower profile, while the cedar’s lateral spread had been reduced as required.

Importantly, both types of tree remained prominent features of the property. The objective was not to remove them, but to use targeted pruning to make their size more manageable within their residential surroundings.

Projects like this demonstrate the range of options available when a mature tree has simply become too large for its location. Depending on the tree and circumstances, crown reduction, side reduction or height reduction may provide an alternative to complete removal.
