A Large Poplar in a Challenging Location
Mature poplar trees can reach considerable heights and develop substantial limbs, making their removal a job for experienced tree surgeons with the appropriate equipment and techniques.
On this project, the tree’s position presented an additional challenge, with electrical infrastructure immediately adjacent to the working area. This meant the dismantle needed to be carefully planned and carried out in controlled stages.
As the photographs show, our climber progressively removed the crown before working down through the larger stems.
Controlled Sectional Dismantling
Rather than attempting to fell the poplar in one piece, our team used sectional dismantling techniques.
The climber worked through the crown, removing branches and reducing the tree in manageable sections. Climbing ropes and appropriate lowering techniques allowed the team to maintain control of the operation as the crown became progressively smaller.
Once the smaller branches had been removed, attention turned to the heavier limbs and main stems.
This approach is particularly useful for large tree removals in restricted or sensitive locations, where the direction and movement of cut material needs to be carefully managed.
Working Around Overhead Electrical Infrastructure
One of the most notable aspects of this project was the tree’s proximity to overhead electrical equipment.
Working around trees and electrical infrastructure requires careful consideration because branches, climbing equipment and tree sections must be kept appropriately controlled. The confined working environment made a methodical dismantling process particularly important on this job.
The before and during photographs clearly demonstrate just how close the mature poplar was to the surrounding infrastructure and why a straightforward felling operation was not appropriate.
Specialist Equipment for a Large Tree Dismantle
Large-scale tree work requires more than climbing and cutting equipment. Our team used suitable machinery on the ground to assist with handling the substantial amount of timber generated during the dismantle.
As the canopy was removed and larger sections reached ground level, material could be processed and organised efficiently.
This allowed the climbing and ground teams to work together throughout the project while keeping the working area manageable.
Timber Retained for the Forest School
One of the best aspects of this project was that the resulting tree material could remain useful.
Instead of taking the timber and suitable woody material away from the site, all waste was left for use by the Forest School.
Forest School activities encourage children to spend time outdoors and engage with natural environments. Retaining suitable sections of wood provides the school with natural material that can potentially be incorporated into its outdoor learning environment and future projects.
It also meant that material from a large tree already growing on the site could remain there and continue to have a purpose after the dismantle.
